Nikki Belt

KF, my youngest victim was 11 years old when I found her. She had been on the streets for 2 years by then, “working” under several different pimps. The streets made her hard, like no 11 year-old you’ve met. Her family had no money, her father was disabled and she had 4 other siblings. She started for money, clothes and shelter and then after some time, she just couldn’t get out. I decided to send her to Children of the Night, a home in LA for trafficking victims, one of very few that would accept minors. We were able to get her a bed and flew her out there, with the hopes that removing her from St. Louis and the people keeping her in “the game” would give her a chance of turning her life around. Within days, she had fought with staff and the other victims. She ran away after 3 days and found a pimp immediately. So, we found her again and brought her home to her family, who simply could not handle her state of mind. We lost track of her after offering numerous social resources. Fast forward 10 years to 2021, both parents had died a couple years after we lost her. She wasn’t in contact with her 4 siblings and had a 4 year-old daughter of her own. She was also wanted by the FBI. I reached out to her, to get in front of the charges. Of course, she did not remember me at first. After recounting all we had done to try to help her all those years before, she said “oh THAT Nikki.” She softened.

These cases; these victims are tough. There is simply no easy resolution, even with all the good resources available. With that said, what if we tried something different? What if in conjunction with other credible and necessary resources that try to sustain and heal these people, we also matched them with a career mentor? A person who can show and guide them through a path which leads to a self-sustaining, life-changing job/career, for which they cannot only be independent and proud but SAFE!

That friends, is exactly what we at Innocent-Warriors are doing! But we can’t do it alone. We need sponsors, mentors and volunteers. We are building this together, starting small and determined to grow.
